Arwed Harms was born in 1967 in Munich, Germany.
In 1989 he moved to Cremona starting violin making under the guidance and supervision of maestro liutaio Vincenzo Bissolotti obtaining the diploma in 1993. During the studies he has also worked with the violinmaker Edgar Russ.

Since 1994 he is self-employed and conducted his business and work from Corso Matteotti, Cremona. In 2003 he moved with his family and his workshop to Fivizzano, district of Massa in Tuscany.

He participated in various international violin making competitions.

Musicians are playing on his instruments all over the world.

He has a closed professional relationship with Hatto Beyerle, violist teaching viola and chamber music in Hannover (Germany), Basel (Switzerland) and Florence (Italy). With Hatto Beyerle he has done and is doing an extensive number of experiments on different models of viola (See the viola page).

He makes violins, violas and violoncellos, using pure oil varnish. The instruments are often antiqued.
